PHILIPPINE Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Director Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. confirmed yesterday that the 6.9 magnitude earthquake last Feb. 6 caused tsunami in some areas in Negros Oriental.
“We have confirmed the occurrence of tsunami. It was localized. There were areas in Guihulngan and La Libertad that were hit by two to three meter waves. Areas that were far from the epicenter were hit by less than one meter waves. Even the other side of Negros and Cebu also experienced tsunami,” Solidum said.
According to PHIVOLCS, in case of tsunamis that were locally generated, there will be not enough time for warning because they occur within a very short time.
This year, the institute plans to further develop their system on earthquake, volcano and tsunami monitoring.
“For tsunami monitoring, we have established a pilot PHIVOLCS designed system way back in 2007. Since we think it is already working well, we will improve it further and we will add more tsunami sensor,” Solidum added.
PHIVOLCS plans to install a local based tsunami in Batangas, Manila Bay, Lingayen Gulf, Subic Bay and Albay Gulf so that the sensors can be tested. Robelle John Valencia (OJT)
