DAET, Camarines Norte -- At least 4,700 board feet of illegally-cut coco lumber were seized by members of the Municipal Police Station of Vinzons town in Bgy. Calangcawan Sur, the police provincial office reported on Wednesday.
Vinzons police chief Senior Insp. Rogelyn Peratero Calandria said an Isuzu truck (WFV-539) registered to Omar Anthony L. Ong was intercepted at a checkpoint on Vinzons Avenue in Bgy. Calangcawan for transporting 900 pieces of coco lumber cut in different sizes of undetermined value.
Police manning the checkpoint led by SPO4 Carlito Lopez reported that the driver of the truck, Edwin Enciso, was unable to present any documents for the contraband.
The truck and its coco lumber cargo were later handed over to the provincial office of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).
The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the PCA issued last January a memorandum order, totally banning the cutting of coconut trees all over the region.
Earlier, a joint team consisting of members of the Labo MPS, the Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CN-PENRO) seized 28 sacks of wood charcoal and 3,000 splits of bamboos loaded in two Mitsubishi transport haulers in Bgy. Mahawan-hawan, Labo town
The seized forest products were placed under the custody of the PENRO for the filing of appropriate charges.
CamNorte Gov. Edgardo Tallado earlier ordered the creation of an environment task force to address the unabated cutting of forest products in the protected forest areas of the province.
