Kalibo airport shut

THE Kalibo International Airport in Aklan was temporarily closed yesterday, after an Airbus A320 aircraft carrying a still undetermined number of passengers overshot the 2,300-meter long runway yesterday morning, shortly after landing. No one was reported hurt in the said incident.

According to Floramel Joy Songsong, spokesperson of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), initial reports said that Air Philippines flight 2P969 piloted by a certain Capt. R. R. Gonzaga and which left the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 9:50 Monday morning, was able to land at Runway 05/23 at 10:32 a.m.

The aircraft however, failed to completely stop before the runway threshold, forcing it to overshoot the runway and stop at its grassy edge.

The Kalibo airport personnel rushed to the disabled aircraft to help the passengers out of the plane.

It was learned that there was intermittent rain showers at the said airport when the incident took place.

The CAAP in Kalibo issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) announcing the temporary closure of the Kalibo Runway because of the disabled aircraft, at around 10:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, airport workers are now busy trying to get the aircraft out of the ditch it got stuck in and reopen the runway at the soonest possible time.

A team of investigators has also been dispatched to Kalibo by the CAAP to determine the cause of the said incident.
