THE Supreme Court yesterday ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Protected Area Management Board, and other government agencies to stop issuing new permits for fishpen operations at Taal Lake in Batangas.
The High Tribunal granted the petition filed by a party-list solon seeking the issuance of a Writ of Kalikasan to protect the lake.
Court administrator and spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said the magistrates issued the writ during its regular executive session held every Tuesday.
Petitioner AGHAM party-list Rep. Angelo Palmones said there were 76 migratory and many endemic species recorded in the lake in 1927, but the number has dwindled over the past 50 years.
Based on the group’s recent inventory, only 15 migratory and four endemic species remain in the lake. They said in 2003 the catch of tawilis, the most popular endemic specie at Taal Lake, dropped by 80 percent.
Palmones said fish kill that happened at the lake last year affected at least 2,105 metric tons of fish worth P148.7 million.
