SAN Miguel, Bulacan -- The chairman of Bgy. Sta. Inez, here, was wounded while his two bodyguards were killed when they were ambushed in Bgy. San Juan, Monday afternoon.
Investigators said Sta. Inez Bgy. Chairman John Bong Alvarez, 39, went to Jessica Facial Care and Body Spa on board a gray Toyota Hi-lux pick-up accompanied by Roel Vidal, 52, of Bgy. Tibagan, Josefino Alvarez, 39, of Bgy. Sta. Ines, Pascualito Banquillo, 47, Fortunato Bacual, 61, both of Bgy. Buliran, this town.
John Bong Alvarez went inside the spa parlor while his companions waited for him outside.
At about 5:30 p.m., three unidentified men wearing crash helmets and black jackets appeared on board two Yamaha Mio motorcycles and suddenly started firing their guns, a compact M-16 rifle and a caliber .45 pistol.
The suspect who was armed with the compact M-16 rifle rushed to the door firing his gun and tried but failed to enter as it was locked.
One of the companions of the village chief was able to retaliate while Banquillo ran to a nearby creek for cover.
Josefino Alvarez sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the head and body, causing his instantaneous death. Roel Vidal, who was seriously wounded, was declared dead on arrival at the San Miguel District Hospital.
The suspects fled towards to an unknown direction.
The bgy. chairman survived and suffered only minor wounds in the arm.
Found at the scene were an M72 fragmentation hand grenade without safety pin and lever and several cartridge cases and slugs for cal. 5.56 and caliber .45. The pieces of evidence were placed under the custody of Bulacan Crime Laboratory Office for examination.
The barangay captain became a prominent political figure in San Miguel when he recently announced his intention to run for mayor in the 2013 local elections.
