A NON-COMMISSIONED officer (NCO) from the Philippine Army’s 26th Infantry Battalion based in Agusan del Sur was killed yesterday after his group caught up with a group of New People’s Army guerrillas whom they have been chasing for the last two days.
Col. Leopoldo Galon, spokesman of the East Mindandano Command (Eastmincom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said the latest encounter occurred in Bgy. Magkalape, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur and resulted in the soldier’s death after he got hit in the chest and died while being airlifted to a local hospital.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notice to his next of kin.
Another soldier, Pfc. Lemuel Altamero, was earlier wounded when the two groups initially encountered each other that resulted in a firefight in Bgy. Del Rosario last Saturday.
