BOTOLAN, Zambales-- A discharged police officer turned political supporter was shot dead by police, while 10 others were arrested, a night before the especial congressional election for the second district of Zambales.
Zambales provincial police director Sr. Supt. Francisco DB Santiago Jr. identified the victim as former P02 Cezar Madoh, 45, a native of Barangay Maparang, Jolo, Sulo, and a resident of Barangay Taugtog this town.
Records of Botolan municipal police chief Sr. Insp. Michael Chavez revealed that Madoh has a standing warrant for malversation of public property and is listed in the Zambales PPO target list under the Karansang Group involved in robbery-holdup and drug trafficking.
The identities of Madoh’s 10 companions were withheld prior to completion of the inquest. They also refused to answer questions from the media. They were released later in the afternoon.
Based on the initial investigation, at around 7:15 p.m. Friday, Chavez received a complaint about a group of armed men on board blue Toyota Altis and Mitsubishi Adventure (ZLW 110) who were harassing local residents here.
In a follow-up operation conducted by joint Botolan MPS and provincial police led by Chief Insp. Preston Bagangan, the two vehicles and the passengers were located in Barangay Santiago near the Botolan-Tarlac Road.
When accosted, Madoh, who was armed with a cal. .45 pistol, allegedly shot the police officers, prompting the lawmen to shoot back, killing Madoh.
Meanwhile, congressional candidate Cheryl Deloso denounced the killing of Madoh and the arrest of his companions, saying they were only checking on the alleged rampant vote-buying in the area.
Gov. Hermogenes Ebdane confirmed that Madoh is a wanted person being a primary suspect in the killing of businessman Steve Lee and the brother of former Botolan mayor.
The governor also denied that his son, Omar, a contender in the congressional race, is tolerating vote buying and instead claimed that they (Ebdane camp) are urging the residents to be vigilant and protect their votes against irregularities.
