GAPAN CITY, Nueva Ecija -- A female school principal was killed while her driver was seriously hurt when the tricycle they were riding collided with a cargo truck which suddenly swerved and took the opposite lane to avoid hitting another vehicle, abruptly stopping in front of it last Monday here.
Police identified the fatality as school principal Emiliana Garcia, 59, of Barangay Bayanihan and  the injured victim as Ryan Pangan, 30, of Barangay Malimba, both of this city.
The mishap occurred along the Maharlika highway in Barangay Sto. Cristo Sur at around 1 p.m.
City police chief Superintendent Nelson Aganon said Pangan was driving a red Kawasaki Bajaj tricycle along the highway with Garcia as his passenger when an unknown vehicle suddenly stopped in front of a red Fuso cargo truck (WAP-579) bound for Manila being driven by Cipriano Apac, 36, of Sta Rosa II, Marilao, Bulacan.
As a result, the truck suddenly swerved to the left, accidentally hitting the approaching tricycle on the opposite lane.
Aganon said both Pangan and Garcia were rushed to the Good Samaritan Hospital for emergency treatment but the latter was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.
He said the driver voluntarily surrendered to the police shortly after the incident.
Charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injuries and damage to property were being filed against the suspect before the city prosecutor’s office here.
