ANTHONY Semerad played his best  game in four years as defending champion San Beda College overcame the  absence of Art dela Cruz to trounce Lyceum of the Philippines University, 84-68, and grab the solo lead yesterday in the NCAA seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions played sloppy basketball in the first half and picked up their game in the last two periods to improve to 3-0 slate.

Later, last season’s runner-up Letran drew big games from Kevin Racal and Mark Cruz to down Mapua, 79-67, and barge into the win column.

The Cardinals, who opened their season with a couple of 34-point blowouts, were very aggressive in the first half but the Knights got their bearings in the final 20 minutes of play to halt a two-game slide.

Semerad matched his career-high 20  points  he scored in 2010 and the Fil-Aussie forward also pulled down eight rebounds to somehow ease  the  absence of dela Cruz.

“It was a very tough battle,” said Semerad.

The league suspended Dela Cruz   for punching  Jeson Cantos in San Beda’s  89-55 win against Mapua last Friday.

Lions mentor Boyet Fernandez praised the Pirates for giving them a tough time in the early goings.

“I credit LPU, they really prepared for us.,” said Fernandez.

Racal had 24 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Cruz, pumped in 23 points for Letran, which ended its worst start in four years.
