MANILA City Mayor Alfredo Lim will be among the powerhouse cast of the country’s political figures who will grace the Team-P-Noy’s kick-off rally on February 12 at the historic Plaza Miranda.
Western Samar Rep. Mel Senen Sarmiento, the secretary general of the ruling Liberal Party (LP), said Lim will campaign hard for the administration coalition during the event to be attended by President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
When asked about the security, Sarmiento said Lim can take care of everything to secure the public and participants of the very important political gathering.
“The host city is taking care of it. Alam n’yo naman ang condition, we don’t like to disrupt traffic. When we sat down with the city officials, we appeal to them to come up with traffic plan to ensure the flow of traffic is smooth as possible,” Sarmiento said.
It will be recalled that the Plaza Miranda bombing nearly 42 years ago or August 21, 1971 almost wiped out the LP hierarchy.
The Plaza Miranda rally turned bloody after two hand grenades were tossed on stage which left nine people dead, including a five-year old child and injured 95 others.
President Aquino’s candidates for the Senate include Aurora Rep. Sonny Angara, former Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, Sen. Antonio Trillanes, former Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chairperson Grace Poe, former Sen. Jamby Madrigal, Ex-Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr., Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Sen. Loren Legarda, Bam Aquino and former Akbayan party-list Rep. Risa Baraquel Hontiveros.
Sarmiento confirmed the attendance of all 12 candidates, including guest candidates Escudero, Poe and Legarda.
He explained Plaza Miranda is the best place to proclaim their candidates and having Lim as one of the closest allies of the Aquino administration.
“We chose Plaza Miranda because it is full of stories especially during its campaign rally in 1971. It is historical, wala naman sanang mangyari,” Sarmiento said.
