SAN Jose City, Nueva Ecija -- A tricycle driver assigned as treasurer of their drivers’ association at the city public market committed suicide by hanging after squandering the collection money intended for their group’s Christmas party.
City police commander Supt. Reynaldo S. dela Cruz identified the suicide victim as Edwin Ong, 39, treasurer of the Rapok City Public Market Drivers Association.
A neighbor, identified as Melchor Caparas, discovered him hanging inside the abandoned house of one Lucena Cunan at 6 a.m.
Police said a nylon cord was looped around the victim’s neck and tied to a wooden beam of the house.
Caparas said he was about to rouse his nephew from sleep for his work when he discovered the victim’s hanging body. Caparas’ nephew sleeps in another room adjacent to the victim’s.
Police said the tricycle drivers group was to celebrate its Christmas party yesterday and the victim, who was the treasurer, could not remit the collection money intended to be used for the said party.
Quoting the victim’s family, Dela Cruz said the victim may have committed suicide because he was so embarrassed for squandering the money intended for their group’s Christmas party.
The victim’s body was brought to Ilagan Memorial Homes here but the victim’s wife declined the conduct of autopsy on the body.
