Soldier, civilian die in resto rumble

A brawl inside a restaurant in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, shortly before midnight Tuesday left an Army soldier and a civilian dead, the Police Regional Office 4-B said yesterday.

The fatalities were identified as Corporal Abundio Aljas, a 44-year old member of the Army’s 76th Infantry Battalion residing in Bagong Silang, Barangay San Roque in San Jose town and security guard Ruel Ilidan,26, a resident of Bgy. La Curva, also in San Jose, Occ. Mindoro.
   
The PRO4-B investigation showed that at around 11:30 p.m., Cpl. Aljas was having dinner inside the restaurant owned by his friend in Bgy. San Isidro when he had a misunderstanding with Ilidan and his companions John Rey Manahan, Rinmar Paz and Rogelio Gonzales.
   
As the soldier was about to leave the place, the suspects, who were armed with knives, suddenly stabbed him several times in the body. However, the trooper was able to drew his pistol and shot Ilidan in the left chest.
   
Both Aljas and Ilidan were taken to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead upon arrival by an attending physician.
   
The three suspects were arrested by responding policemen and are now being held at the San Jose Municipal Police Station jail, facing criminal charges, said PRO4-B officer-in-charge Senior Supt. Renato C. Angara.
