PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has approved a study on the feasibility of tapping nuclear power to beef up the country’s energy supply.
The study will determine whether to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant or set up a new facility, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi bared in his speech in Batangas City.
“The President has spoken, and he made clarification, and I seek clearance that I should proceed to work for implementation …he gave me very specific instructions,” said Cusi as he delivered his speech during the inauguration of the San Gabriel and Avion natural gas power plants.
“I gave him assurance that we will not do it recklessly…the security on the use of nuclear and safety,” he added.
Cusi earlier said reviving the Bataan plant would cost $1 billion.
The President previously nixed nuke power under his presidency.
