A HOUSE leader has condemned the unabated corruption among the members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Customs (BoC).
Citizens Battle Against Corruption (CIBAC) party-list Rep. Sherwin Tugna, House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms chair, urged a Makati police inspector and a Customs official to have themselves subjected to investigations led by their respective offices after allegations of extortion and corruption surfaced Tuesday.
“I call on the concerned individuals to come out in the open and shed light on their involvement in the allegations being hurled at them. If the allegations turn out to be true, then they should be ready to face the repercussion of their actions,” said Tugna, a lawyer and member of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa) led by Martin Romualdez, a former House independent bloc leader and ex-Leyte congressman, as president.
Tugna noted that despite the removal from office of the customs official, BoC Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon should still investigate the alleged involvement of the said official in corrupt practices.
“We have to show the people that we are devoted in our resolve to rid the bureaucracy of corrupt personnel. This is one of the campaign promises of the Duterte administration, which our people continue to believe in will be done. Moreover, our country benefits from tourists visiting and spending their money here and from businesses which fuel our economy. By protecting these people and businesses from abuses of corrupt officials, we are showing the international community that we enforce the law in our country and it is safe to spend their vacation and to spend and invest their money here. It is a win-win situation for us. We protect ourselves by protecting them,” Tugna concluded.
