IT was a mix of familiar names and relatively unknown provincial players who emerged winners at the recently -concluded Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Championship series Surallah, South Cotabato leg which was actually played anew in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat because of unplayable playing conditions in Surallah.
Leading the charge of multi leg winners were Carlyn Bless Guarde from Isulan who ruled both the girls’ 16 & under and 18 & under categories, continuing her consistent performance from the previous leg also held in Isulan. She beat Davao City’s Danna Mariella Abad, 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 for the 18 & under crown and earlier, disposed of 14 & under champion Sydney Ezra Enriquez from Zamboanga del Norte, 6-0, 6-2 in the 16 & under finals. Enriquez consoled herself with the 14 & under title where she posted an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over CDO’s Casey Padilla in the 10-year-old grassroots tennis developmental program also supported by Dunlop as the official ball.
The other individual winner in the distaff side was up and coming North Cotabato bet Tenniele Madis, who delivered a double win after topping the 12 & under at the expense of Padilla, 6-0, 6-2, and the 10 & under unisex group where she beat Reyman Saldivar Jr., 4-1, 4-2.
“I am truly pleased when I hear new names coming out as winners in this series, it really shows that there are a lot of potentials in the provinces given the opportunity to show what they can do,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, president/CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier and current PHILTA chairman.
