PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte couldn’t help but take a dig at critics from the Commission on Human Rights even as he said the victory of Miss International Kylie Verzosa lifts up the Filipino spirit.

Verzosa was crowned shortly after Duterte’s plane had taken off from Tokyo, Japan homeward bound.

When asked for Duterte’s thoughts on Verzosa’s victory shortly after he arrived from a visit from Japan on Thursday night, he said the shining moment is a source of Filipino pride.

“I am always happy if our beautiful women win all the titles. Kasi Filipino tayo eh. It gives us konting hambog, it lifts... parang mayabang tayo na ‘O, kita mo, magaganda ang mga aming Pilipinas’,” Duterte said.

Duterte however could not resist grabbing the opportunity to needle the Commission on Human Rights with which he has been at odds. “Pero lahat kayo diyan sa human rights commission mga pangit,” he said.

The President met with the new Miss Universe earlier this week in Tokyo where the pageant was staged.

Duterte said he is looking forward to another face-to-face encounter with Verzosa .

“I’d like to meet her to congratulate her,” the President said.
