CITY of San Fernando, Pampanga -- A component city in Pampanga which was earlier tagged by the Philippine National Police as an infested area of illegal drugs, is gaining grounds in fighting the drug menace by ridding its barangays from the claws of drug addiction.
For about 16 weeks, the Mabalacat City Police Station, led by Supt. Juritz Rara, was able to declare six barangays as drug-free.
Rara said Bgys. Sto. Rosario, Sta. Maria, Mangalit, Paralayunan, Bundagul and Sapang Balen passed the 14 parameters set by the PNP and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in declaring a certain area as drug-free.
He said the parameters include the non-availability of drug supply and absence of drug transit and transshipment activity, clandestine drug laboratory, drug warehouse, clandestine chemical warehouse, marijuana cultivation site, drug den, drug pushers, drug users, protector/coddler and financier.
Also, to be declared drug-free, a barangay must have barangay officials implementing anti-drugs drive, active involvement of SK to help maintain the drug-liberated status of the barangay.
Furthermore, drug awareness, preventive education and other related programs and processing desk for surrenderees will qualify a barangay to be declared as drug-free.
Rara said from August 1 to October 11, 2016, there were no drug-related activities monitored in the said barangays.
In connection with this, Mayor Marino Morales said the six barangays will receive P1 million each annually from the city government to augment the barangay funds in its campaign against illegal drugs.
