A city prosecutor of Mati City in Davao Oriental was shot dead by unidentified men on Wednessay morning.
Justice Undersecretary Erickson Balmes said initial information reaching his office identified the fatality as Rolando Acido, who was shot by two riding-in-tandem gunmen while on his way to Mati Hall of Justice yesterday morning.
Balmes said Acido is a stroke patient and half paralyzed but still working as city prosecutor.
“Pagbaba sa car, papunta sa court, binaril. He succumbed to gunshot wounds caused by two persons riding in tandem,” he told DOJ reporters.
Local police said they will dig deeper into the case and find some witnesses in the area to identify the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecution Office (NPS) yesterday condemned the killing of Acido by still unidentified men.
“We, at the National Prosecution Services, condemn the cowardly and senseless killing of City Prosecutor Rolando Acido of the Office of the City Prosecutor of Mati, Davao Oriental,” Prosecutor General Claro Arellano said in a statement.
“We convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the late City Prosecutor Acido,” he noted.
Arellano said the timing and circumstances of the ambush against the city prosecutor raise question about whether it was related to his work as a prosecutor.
He said the ambush of Acido is another tragic episode in the sordid saga of the dangers faced by our prosecutors in the performance of their duties.
“We urged the PNP and the NBI to conduct parallel investigations to conclusively determine all of the circumstances surrounding this treacherous attack against City Prosecutor Acido so that the culprits may be immediately brought to justice,” the prosecutor general stressed.
