JAMFY Pioneers-Secret Spices shocked defending champion Macway Travel Club, 101-88, while Wang’s Ballclub overwhelmed New San Jose Builders, 81-68, to boost their chances in the 2016 MBL Open basketball tournament at the Rizal Coliseum.

Jamfy leaned on the superb all-around games of James Castro and Mel Mabigat and the late-game heroics of former Red Bull/Barako mainstay Warren Ybanez to pull the rug from under Macway in the tournament sponsored by Smart Sports,  Ironcon Builders, Star Bread,  Dickies Underwear and Gerry’s Grill.
Castro, the 5-9 spitfire from Arellano University, exploded with 33 points, while Mabigat, the 6-1 mainstay of La  Consolacion, added 23 points for Jamfy of coach Jigs Samaniego and manager Macky Villarta.
Ybanez, however, was the star of the night.
Ybanez nailed back-to-back three-point shots with the shot clock winding down to seal the win for Jamfy after Macway came charging back to threaten at 88-92 with still two minutes left.
The 5-9 guard, who played five seasons for Red Bull/Barako in the PBA from 2004-09, finished with 13 points, the last three on another buzzer-beating three-pointer with the outcome already settled.
Toffee Santos added 17 points for Jamfy, which bounced back from a 63-103 setback to FEU-NRMF last Oct. 5 to improve to 2-1.
Former PBA players Larry Rodriguez and Nino Marquez led Macway with 21 and 17 points, respectively.
The 6-4 Rodriguez, who last played for Rain or Shine, scored eight points during a furious rally that saw Macway reduce an 18-point third-quarter deficit to only four, 88-92, going into the final two minutes.
Pol Santiago added 15 points and Jack Corpuz had 10 for the Daniel Martinez-mentored Macway.
Earlier, Wang’s Ballclub rode on former Emilio Aguinaldo player John Tayongtong to beat NSJBI and barge into the win column after two losses.
Tayongtong fired 18 points for the Mandaluyong-based team of businessmsn-sportsman Alex Wang.
Rey Publico added 12 points and Mark Montuano and Macky Acosta contributed 11 point apiece.
MLQU standout Nikko Lao carried the fight for the Builders of coach Ranier Carpio and playing manager Jomar Acuzar.
