Driver dies, woman hurt in ambush

STO. Tomas, Batangas -- A 50-year-old driver died on the spot while his companion was seriously injured when they were shot several times inside a tricycle they were riding by unidentified suspects on Sampalucan Road, Bgy. San Roque, here.

Police identified the victims as Mario Guevarra Villegas and Mercy Balbuena Villegas, both of Bgy. San Pedro, this town.

Police investigators and a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team  responded when a security guard of Sto. Tomas General Hospital (STGH) called up the police station at 12:10 p.m. last Oct. 3.

Investigation by PO2s Emiliano Carandang and Tyrone Jorsua Micosa showed that the victims boarded a Yamaha tricycle with “For registration” plate registered to Marilyn Sentenerial, of B6, L18, Pillar Vill., Banjo East, Tanauan City, and driven by Noel Sordan Lacostales, 40, of Ramonita County Homes, Bgy. Darasa.

The tricycle was traversing along Sampalucan Road when the back rider of a motorcycle with unknown plate number wearing helmet and a jacket fired at the victims several times.
   
Mario sustained gunshot wounds in different parts of the body that caused his instantaneous death  while Mercy was hit in the back. She was rushed to STGH.
   
The suspects fled towards Tanauan Cityn, witnesses said.
   
The Regional Crime Laboratory Office 4A, led by Chief Insp. Gennifer Encabo, recovered six fired cartridge casings for unknown caliber of firearm at the scene.
