SENATOR Risa Hontiveros yesterday appealed to the administration to defend Mary Jane Veloso’s “right to life” and to not give up on her.
“Hindi natin dapat sukuan si Mary Jane. Huwag nating isuko ang buhay ng ating kababayang biktima lamang ng illegal drug trafficking,” said Hontiveros in a statement.
The senator said the government must continue to pursue all effective channels to make permanent the reprieve granted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo to Veloso.
“I urge the Duterte administration to defend Mary Jane’s right to life,” she added.
Meanwhile, Vice President Leni Robredo urged the administration to take appropriate action on the case of convicted drug mule Mary Jane Veloso.
Robredo joined other groups in appealing for Veloso's clemency, stressing that she was a victim of drug trafficking.
Robredo said the government should keep in mind the welfare of Veloso as well as all the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have sacrifices for their families and for the country.
“We trust that the administration will immediately shed light on this report to address the understandable concern of so many of us Filipinos,” Robredo said in a statement.
