OUR Lady of Fatima University survived Manuel Luis Quezon University, 79-74, and Lyceum of Subic Bay trounced City University of Pasay, 96-84, to keep their hopes alive in the 2016 NAASCU men ‘s basketball tournament at the Enderun  gym in Taguig.

The victories enabled the Phoenix and the Sharks to improve to 4-1 win-loss in the 14-team, single-round tournament.

The Phoenix blew a commanding 17-point cushion in the third quarter and needed back-to-back baskets by rookie center Christopher Essomba and veteran guard Miguel Bryan Cabrera in the closing minute to escape with the win.

Essomba's undergoal basket came after Gianne Rivera nailed a long three-pointer with 1:23 left to put MLQU to within 71-72 after trailing by as much as 32-49.

Rivera added another triple for MLQU to make it 74-77 with still 14 seconds left, but Jessie Pedrosa sealed the win for Fatima with two free throws.

Jerome Juanico led  all scorers for the Ralph Emerson Rivera-mentored  Phoenix with 14 points, followed by Emil Japzon 11 and Joseph  Marquez and Pedrosa with 10.

Rivera topscored for MLQU with 18 points, including nine during the Stallions' furious rally in the fourth period.

Chris Bitoon added 17 points and Nikko Lao contributed 12 for the Stallions, who are making a comeback under coach Jimmy Manansala, Jr.
