NAGA City -- City Engineer Leon B. Palmiano had urged the Sangguniang Panglunsod for the immediate passage of a resolution either limiting the entry of vehicles to historic Colgante Bridge or its temporary closure to traffic after a Department of Public Works and Highways inspection team found structural defects, particularly corrosion in its steel foundations.
Palmiano said the Colgante Bridge reconstruction will cost the city government at least P9.3 million which will be given priority funding allocation by next year. A structural engineer expert recommended the retrofitting of the bridge to support an imminent sagging of its abutment.
For the Peñafrancia fluvial procession on Sept. 17 this year, the city engineer recommended the total closure of the bridge to devotees and spectators as the bridge could only withstand five-ton vehicles or huge volume of crowds.
DPWH Cam. Sur 2nd District Engineering Office Asst. Engineer Richard Emmanuel Ragragio said that last Aug. 15, the DPWH inspected the Mabulo, Tabuco “Rosales” or Panganiban Bridges and the Magsaysay Bridge and the Colgante Bridge which was reconstructed in 1973.
