CATHOLICS go to the churches today to have their foreheads marked with ash, which signals the start of Lent or the 40-day season commemorating the Passion of Jesus Christ.
Philippine Catholic church officials over the weekend started preparations for Ash Wednesday, gathering the previous year’s “palaspas” to be burned into ashes.
In Manila, Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle has reminded Catholics to be united in “continued conversion” at the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
“Ash Wednesday ushers in the season of Lent. As we welcome this season of renewal, let us be united with all of God’s people, for we all share the need for continued conversion as we move away from sin and move toward Christ,” Tagle said in his message.
“We are called upon to support each other in solidarity by praying, fasting and giving alms to the poor as we undertake our conversion journey in preparation for Easter,” he added.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said having the forehead marked with ash is a devotion and obligation that should be done by every faithful and believer of the Catholic church because it indicates repentance and belief in the gospel.
The CBCP also added that Ash Wednesday serves as the Catholic church’s reminder that Catholics should take time to think of the direction that they would like their life to take.
