VICE President Jejomar C. Binay yesterday said the reinstatement of the “au pair” program in previously banned European countries will create new employment opportunities for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“The lifting of the ban on the au pair program is sure to bring employment opportunities to Filipinos,” Binay said.
However, the Vice President warned potential au pairs to wait for official announcements from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and not to go to third-party go-betweens. He also warned unscrupulous agencies not to exploit the scheme. Binay serves as the Presidential Adviser on OFW Concerns.
“Au pair” is a French term meaning “on par” or “equal to”. Filipinos under the au pair program “live on an equal basis in a reciprocal, caring relationship” with their host families, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). The intent is for the foreigner to be at par or equal to locals, by being treated as a member of the family instead of a domestic servant.
