EXPLORING Mt. Kanlaon is temporarily prohibited after trained guides and rescue groups noticed cracks and landslides on the volcano believed caused by the recent 6.9 earthquake.
The Department of Natural Resources suspended indefinitely all mountaineering activities at Mt. Kanlaon Natural Parks in Negros Occidental to avoid tragedy. The order covers both local and foreign mountaineers.
DENR Secretary Ramon Paje said the move is imperative to ensure the safety of mountaineers and other park visitors.
Field personnel conducting assessment and monitoring activities are also told to be on watch of possible falling rocks and other sediments.
Paje said frequent aftershocks coupled with occasional heavy rains endanger the lives of mountain trekkers and tourists as well. Joel dela Torre
