Public warned on fake ‘cops’

PHILIPPINE National Police chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome yesterday warned the public on bogus non-governmental organizations using the name ‘POLICE’ to solicit donations and sponsorships.

Bartolome ordered a massive crackdown against these unscrupulous organizations using the name of the PNP to mulct  from the unsuspecting public particularly the business community.

Presidents of 30 NGOs belonging to the PNP Federation of Accredited NGO or PNPFAN aired their concern regarding the wearing of uniform with the word “POLICE” by some groups misrepresenting themselves as affiliated with the PNP.

They cited the Police Hotline Movement, Inc. whose members are said to be wearing t-shirt with the big letters ‘POLICE’ although they are not accredited by the PNP  Directorate for Police-Community Relations which has the sole authority to approve NGO accreditations.

The group claimed they have an existing memorandum of agreement with the Manila Police District Station 3 allowing their members to use the word ‘POLICE’, they being PNP ‘Force Multipliers.’

Bartolome warned the public on the illicit activities of these bogus NGOs which use the name of the PNP to solicit donations, sponsorships and sell tickets to their targets.

“As provided by law, the PNP reserves exclusive right and sole authority to use the word ‘Police’, and it is expressly unlawful for any person or entity to usurp this law-mandated authority,” Bartolome said

He also reminded the accredited NGOs and the public on the existing prohibition to use the word ‘Police’ as part of the NGO organization’s name since it could mislead or confuse the public into believing that it is part of the national government or another law enforcement agency.

Bartolome emphasized that the PNP or police name cannot be use in their logos, symbols and/or uniform as part of their corporate communication, uniform, signage, insignia, badge, rank and other paraphernalia.   Alfred Dalizon
