Traffic code to be part of high school curriculum

THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) is targeting to include in the 3rd and 4th  year high school curriculum the Land Transportation Traffic Code especially traffic rules and regulations.

This was announced by Transportation Assistant Secretary and LTO Chief Virginia Torres during the launching of Motorcycles Safety Program at the agency’s compound in Quezon City last Tuesday morning.

Assec. Torres said her office led by the Traffic Safety Division (LTO-TSD) is now closely coordinating with the Department of Education (DepEd) regarding the proposal to include the subject on transportation in 3rd and 4th year high school.

Torres said it’s about time for young or teens to learn motorcycle safety program.

The ultimate goal of the program is to include the training in the curriculum of 3rd and 4th year high school students as elective subjects.

“Kung mapapansin n’yo, maraming kabataan ngayon ang gumagamit ng motorsiklo kaya talagang very timely ang programang ito,” Torres said in an interview.

In a separate interview, transport group leaders lauded Torres in her willingness to include traffic rules in high school curriculum.

“Maraming mahahalagang paksa ang dapat malaman ng mga estudyante sa high school tungkol sa transportation,” said Orlando Marquez, president of Liga ng Transportasyon at Opereytor sa Pilipinas.

Citing statistics, Marquez said that most traffic violations have been caused by lack of knowledge on traffic rules and signs among drivers and even traffic enforcers.

He said that even traffic policemen now need to undergo regular education seminar on traffic enforcement and management to help them become efficient in the performance of their duties.
