A PUBLIC prosecutor yesterday likened impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona to detained former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who allegedly would not mind pushing the country to the brink of a constitutional crisis just to advance their personal interests.
Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares said Corona’s “strategy for personal survival” reminds him very well of Mrs. Arroyo at the height of the “Hello Garci” election fraud scandal that rocked her administration in July 2005.
“This is very typical of, I remember a small lady, President Gloria Arroyo during the ‘Hello Garci’ controversy when she pushed the country to the brink of constitutional crisis just because of her personal issues,” said Colmenares.
Colmenares recalled that Mrs. Arroyo continued to cling on to her position despite repeated calls for her resignation after a wiretapped recording surfaced of her conversations with an election official to rig the results of the 2004 presidential elections in her favor.
He said Corona is facing a similar situation now following the discovery of at least P32 million in unreported deposits with two commercial banks, which is way beyond the P3.5 million he declared as “cash and investments” as of 2010.
