Pope names new Davao Archbishop

POPE Benedict XVI has named Zamboanga Archbishop Romulo Valles as the new head of the Archdiocese of Davao.

Valles replaced former Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla, 77, whose resignation has been accepted by the pontiff.

Papal Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Guiseppe Pinto announced Valles’ appointment.

Valles has been serving the Zamboanga archdiocese for five years. The archdiocese covers the Prelature of Ipil and Isabela, Basilan and the Apostolic Vicariate of Jolo.

Born on July 10, 1951 in Maribojoc, Bohol, Valles was ordained on April 6, 1976. On June 24, 1997, he was appointed fourth bishop of Kidapawan by Blessed Pope John Paul II. His Episcopal ordination was on Aug. 6, 1997.

On Nov. 13, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him the fifth archbishop of Zamboanga. He was installed on Jan. 9, 2007.

Valles’ predecessor  Capalla is a former CBCP president and is known for his advocacy on justice and peace in Mindanao. He initiated peace program and campaign in the Southern Philippines by promoting inter-religious dialogues and social justice.

Among his achievements was the Bishop-Ulama Conference, a pioneering effort towards better understanding and solution to Christian and Muslim conflict in Mindanao.

The date for the canonical installation of the new Davao Archbishop is yet to be announced. The Vatican said Capalla will be the temporary administrator of the Davao archdiocese until Valles’ installation is set.
