SPEAKER Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. yesterday doused cold water on the proposal of a public prosecutor to impeach the eight associate justices of the Supreme Court (SC) who voted in favor of barring the Senate Impeachment Court from opening the five dollar accounts in Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) allegedly owned by impeached SC Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Belmonte said he would not support the position of Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas, deputy lead prosecutor, who insisted on impeaching the eight members of the SC justices responsible behind the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) against presenting PSBank records pertaining to the purported foreign accounts of Corona.
While Belmonte expressed belief that the position taken by Fariñas would not fly, he understands the sentiments of his colleague.
“He’s (Fariñas) just feeling frustrated. I would not support it myself,” said Belmonte.
On Thursday evening, Fariñas declared war against eight SC justices as he vowed to ask the blessing of the House leadership on his intention to oust the members of the Higher Court through constitutional means.
Fariñas maintained that the issuance of a TRO is tantamount to encroaching the powers of the Senate which has the sole authority to try and decide on impeachment cases under the Constitution. Ryan Ponce Pacpaco
