LEYTE Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez late Wednesday evening called on the public to remain calm amid tensions triggered by the on-going impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Romualdez, the new president of the Philippine Constitution Association, challenged the public to protect and defend the Constitution against those who will attempt to trample it.
“For now, all that we can do is observe the process and remain vigilant to ensure that the rule of law will always prevail, and at the same time, stand guard against those who want to undermine the Constitution,” said Romualdez, a lawyer, as he cautioned that the impeachment process should not be used as a tool for partisan politics, personal vendetta or hatred.
“I call on everyone to be vigilant and do our share in preserving the Constitution, for in the end, lest we forget, the exigencies of the moment will ultimately be judged in the harsh light of history,” Romualdez added.
Romualdez’s speech was in line with Philconsa’s annual observance of Constitution Day and induction of its Board of Governors and Officers aimed at promoting public awareness of the Constitution’s relevance to the nation and the people.
He also expressed gratitude to his election as Philconsa president. “I am both greatly humbled and honored that the association has seen me fit to take over. As both a lawyer and a legislator, it is my esteemed duty to ensure obedience and respect for the Constitution.”
The lawmaker assured the group that he will be “responsible in safeguarding our Constitution” as president of Philconsa.
“The pressure of this duty is brought to the fore especially during these trying times, when our Constitution and the guarantee of the co-equality of the three branches of government are in danger of being desecrated,” said Romualdez.
The Philconsa Medal of Wisdom and Courage was presented to Commission on Elections chair Sixto Brillantes Jr., Executive Sec. Paquito Ochoa, Jr. and Reps. Hermilando Mandanas of Batangas, Jesus Crispin Remulla of Cavite and Tobias Tiangco of Navotas.
