Corona defender blocked his appointment in 2010

WHAT an irony this impeachment trial brings!

A person who vehemently opposed Renato Corona’s appointment as Supreme Court Chief Justice in 2010 is now defending him.

Atty. Karen Jimeno, tagged as “courtroom crush” or the “new crush ng bayan”, signed a manifesto against Corona in January 18, 2010.

Some of Jimeno’s co-signatories were 42 others who are all members of the UP College of Law faculty. Dean Marvic Leonen was also one of the signatories. He is now the government’s chief negotiator for peace process.

The manifesto was published on the page B3 of the Philippine Star dated January 26, 2010.

The manifesto was titled Maintained Fealty to the Rule of Law; Let the Next President appoint the new Chief Justice….Statement of Members of the Faculty, January 18, 2010.

The manifesto said in part: “We, the members of the UP College of Law Faculty, are of the firm conviction that the incumbent President (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) cannot appoint the next Chief Justice when the present Chief Justice Renato Puno retires on May 17, 2010. We do not see any reason why the constitutional provision for the President not to issue any ‘midnight appointment’ in the twilight of her term should not be followed.”   Marlon Purificacion
