End of Del Castillo impeachment seen

ONE of the complainants against Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo yesterday conceded that the issue would not reach the Senate Impeachment Court because of the trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello said it would be impossible to impeach Del Castillo since most of the officials of the House committee on justice are busy attending the trial of Corona in the Senate Impeachment Court.

“I am skeptical that this (Del Castillo impeachment) will push through with the presence of the major issue of impeaching the Chief Justice,” said Bello.

Bello explained that the political arena will be “overloaded” if lawmakers are both busy impeaching Corona and Del Castillo before the Senate Impeachment Court.

“This will also overload the political system at a time that the Corona impeachment is already the focus of so much time and resources,” said Bello.

As of press time yesterday, the 9:30 a.m. hearing today by the House committee on justice was standing.

The committee is scheduled to determine the sufficiency or insufficiency of the ground of Del Castillo’s impeachment and resolve if there is probable cause with four session days left since yesterday for the committee to dispose of the complaint.       Ryan Ponce Pacpaco
