AMWSLAI raises funds for fallen members’ families


THE Air Materiel Wing Savings and Loan Association, Inc. (AMWSLAI), a non-stock firm servicing uniformed members and personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Department of National Defense, recently raised funds for families and dependents of fallen soldiers and cops through a song competition featuring 11 singing masters from the AFP.

AMWSLAI Chairman and President Col. Ricardo L. Nolasco, Jr., PAF (ret.) turned over the proceeds of the first ever AMWSLAI AFP-PNP Singing Soldier Battle of the Champions to Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo towards the end of the contest held Thursday evening at the Music Museum.

Retired Navy Ensign Mel Sorillano, Eat Bulaga’s first AFP Singing Soldier champion, romped away with the top prize of P150,000, besting TSgt. Wilhelmo Celestial and PFC Malou Villanezo-Eslaga both of the Philippine Army. Celestial, also a former Eat Bulaga Singing Soldier winner, placed second and Eslaga third, respectively.

Former President Joseph Estrada, Madame Imelda Marcos, U.S. Consul General Mike Schimmel, Mrs. Mary Rose Dellosa, Cory Quirino Tapalla, and arts patron and philanthropist Jenny Napoles sat as judges, with Prof. Raul M. Sunico of the UST Conservatory of Music as chair.

Completing the board of judges  were Joseph Calata of the Calata Group of Companies, Central Affirmative President and CEO Joel Cruz and entertainment editors Emmie Velarde of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Crispina Martinez-Belen of Manila Bulletin, Ricky Lo of the Philippine Star, and Eugene Asis of People’s Journal.
