A GROUP of progressive party-list lawmakers has pushed the swift passage of a bill aimed at reorganizing the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to address censorship problems in the country.
Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casiño said House Bill (HB) No. 5561 seeks to protect and promote freedom of expression in motion pictures and television programs in the country.
“The bill will ensure that the MTRCB shall exist to primarily classify motion pictures and television programs in order to aid citizens, especially parents, in guiding and/or supervising their children and young adults in making choices with regard to films and television programs,” said Casiño, the bill’s principal author.
Gabriela Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan, another author of the bill, said it is high time to replace a martial law relic by repealing Presidential Decree (PD) No. 1986 which had created the censorship body.
