REIGNING MVP Grethcel Soltones was at her usual beast form as San Sebastian swept San Beda, 25-16, 25-13, 25-16, to gain a share of the lead in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Centre.
Atoning from her uninspiring performance the last time out, Soltones came through with 21 points and 10 digs to power the Lady Stags to a fourth straight win.
San Sebastian joined defending champion College of Saint Benilde on top of the standings.
Later, Arellano University overcame a narrow third set loss to repulse Letran, 25-18, 25-14, 29-31, 25-17, for its third consecutive win.
Soltones, who is hoping to win a title for the Lady Stags on her final season, outhit the entire Lady Red Spikers crew, 20-19, in the 61 minute clash of the unbeaten squads.
“The last game was a wake up call and the team vowed to come back strong,” said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb.
Rookie Cesca Racraquin led San Beda’s charge with 11 hits, including two service aces.
The loss ended the Lady Red Spikers’ three-game winning run as they are now tied with the Lady Chiefs in third spot.
Jovie Prado paced Arellano with 17 points highlighted by five service aces while Andrea Marzan had a career-best 16 points.
Faith Torres finished with 15 points, including three digs while Miracle Mhae Mendoza added 10 points, including three blocks for the Lady Knights.
Letran dropped to 0-4.
In the men’s division, John Joseph Cabillan came through with 14 points as the Chiefs stayed perfect in four starts with a 25-10, 25-18, 18-25, 25-18 trampling of the Knights.
