JUSTICE Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II yesterday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the death of Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. of Albuera, Leyte inside the Baybay City jail last Saturday.

Aguirre directed the NBI to conduct a parallel probe “to avoid any suspicion of whitewash.”

He underscored the need for an  NBI probe since operatives of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) were reportedly involved in the incident after Espinosa supposedly engaged them in a shootout while being served a search warrant.

Espinosa, who was tagged by President Duterte in the illegal drug trade in the Visayas, earlier surrendered to PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa for fear of his life. He was allowed to go home and was arrested last month on firearms charges.

His son Kerwin, who was also tagged as drug lord operating in the Visayas, was arrested in Abu Dhabi in the UAE last month.

Prior to his death, Mayor Espinosa had executed an affidavit naming the government officials who allegedly protected and benefited from his son’s drug trade.
