A police officer assigned as beat patroller was shot dead by a suspicious-looking man he reportedly accosted before dawn yesterday in Caloocan City.
Caloocan police chief Senior Supt. Johnson Almazan said PO2 Rancel Cruz, 36, of 925 Cebu St., Sampaloc, Manila, and presently assigned at the Caloocan Police Community Precinct (PCP) 2, died on the spot from a bullet wound in the head.
Cruz was conducting a routine patrol at around 1:10 a.m. on board his motorcycle when he noticed that something was bulging on the waistline of a suspicious-looking man who was walking along 3rd Avenue towards M.H. Del Pilar Street.
The police officer blocked the path of the suspect and tried to accost him but the latter pulled out an unknown caliber of firearm and shot the victim once in his head. After the killing, the suspect fled on foot, leaving the bloodied and lifeless body of the victim
Caloocan police deputy chief for administration Supt. Ferdinand Del Rosario said they already have the description of the assailant who was wearing sleeveless white shirt and short pants after investigators got hold of the footage from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the area.
A follow-up operation was conducted by elements of PCP-2 led by Chief Insp. Moner Orang but failed to arrest the suspect.
