DESPITE tightened security at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) several contraband items were still seized in yesterday’s “Oplan Galugad” conducted by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and Philippine National Police Special Action Force (SAF).

BuCor Director Rolando Asuncion said inmates’ cells at the medium security compound at the NBP were raided at 10 a.m.

He said confiscated during the raid were 18 cellular phones, various bladed weapons that included several kitchen knives and improvised knife, ice pick and playing cards.

Asuncion said the raid lasted more than two hours as they practically scoured every nook and corner of the building looking for prohibited items.

He also disclosed that after the raid he ordered the transfer of 13 inmates from the medium security compound to building 14 of the maximum security compound after they were implicated in the illegal drug trade in the penitentiary.

He said the inmates were identified by Nonilo “Nonnie” Arille, a former Manila policeman serving sentence at the NBP, at the House justice committee hearing on the illegal drug trade inside the NBP.

Asuncion also said that inmates Jaybee Sebastian, Peter Co at Vicente Sy who testified in last Monday’s House hearing are still recuperating at the Medical Center of Muntinlupa (MCM) from knife wounds they suffered in an attack by fellow inmates.
