Three armed men on board a car were killed in an encounter with the Sta. Rosa police and Highway Patrol Group (HPG) after the former ignored a checkpoint for Oplan Sita conducted in Bgy. Tagapo on the national highway in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna, yesterday morning.
A report to acting Laguna police director Senior Supt. Joel C. Pernito by Supt. Giovanni Martinez, Sta. Rosa police chief, said the slain suspects remained unidentified as of this writing.
Two of the armed suspects died on the spot while their companion died hours later while undergoing treatment at the community hospital in Sta. Rosa.
Initial investigation revealed that the suspects on board a silver Toyota Vios (EBE-962) were travelling along Dictado Road when they were flagged down by members of the Sta. Rosa Police Station who were conducting Oplan Sita.
The suspects, however, sped towards Balibago and opened fire at the lawmen. HPG members, who were conducting a checkpoint on Tagapo National Highway in front of Sinai Hospital, engaged the suspects in a shootout at 1:29 a.m. that resulted in the killing the suspects.
According to Marti-nez, the suspects were members of the “Rent- Tangay carjacking group,” who were spotted in front of a convenience store of a gas station removing the license plates of a car and replacing them with another.
Police had recovered inside the car two athletic police uniforms and two bullcaps, 21 plastic sachets of suspected shabu and a Remington cal. .45 and two cal. .38 revolvers.
Martinez said they are still conducting a follow- up operation for the identities of the suspects and the owner of the vehicle they used.
