John Lloyd Cruz with Charo Santos John Lloyd Cruz with Charo Santos

IT’S very courageous of well known matinee idol and romantic leading man John Lloyd Cruz to accept his unconventional role in “Ang Babaeng Humayo”, which is inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s short story, “God Sees the Truth But Waits”, and currently an entry in the 73rd Venice International Filmfest. He plays the role of a transsexual no less, who also happens to be an epileptic, and his unusual name is Hollanda. This is certainly quite a big departure from the glamorous roles he has done in the blockbuster romcoms he did for Star Cinema.

As a streetwalker in women’s clothes, John Lloyd becomes the good friend of Charo Santos- Concio as Horacia, a former teacher who was convicted of a crime she didn’t commit and is now out for revenge against her former lover, Michael de Mesa. In her desire to take revenge on Michael, Charo also puts John Lloyd’s life in danger.

Will his faithful fans be able to take John Lloyd’s adventurous foray as a cross-dressing character? He has played a gay role before in “In My Life” with Vilma Santos, but he was still a straight acting homosexual in that movie. Unlike in “Babaeng Humayo” where he plays a flaming faggot.

This is John Lloyd’s second screen outing with Director Lav Diaz after “Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis” that won acclaim at the Berlin Filmfest. It’s obviously a daring experiment and we hope it will have a good pay off for him. John Lloyd joined the retinue of Charo and Lav in Venice and here’s wishing them to bring home the proverbial bacon.

SOPHIE NOT CLOSE TO AUNT KRIS, WANTS TO BECOME FAMOUS ON HER OWN

SOPHIE Albert just signed up a long term movie contract with Mother Lily Monteverde as one of the Millennial Regal Babies. Sophie started with Star Magic then joined TV5’s “Artista Academy” in 2012 where she became the female winner. Her first big assignment after winning was “Never Say Goodbye” where she got to work with Nora Aunor and Cesar Montano.

She also did “Undercover” with Derek Ramsay, tried comedy in “Tropa Mo Ko Unli” and starred in some stories in “Wattpad Presents”. She started taping a new soap, the local adaptation of “Pretty Little Liars”, but was shelved. She has appeared in the movie “#Y” with Elmo Magalona and has just finished a new one, “Moonlight Over Baler”, with Vin Abrenica that is meant for the Metro Filmfest.

It’s common know-ledge she’s related to the Cojuangcos and her dad is a nephew of the late Pres. Cory Aquino, but she’s not that close to her aunt who’s in showbiz, Kris Aquino. Her dad became comatose after a stroke  15 years  ago and her mom became the family’s breadwinner.

Her real name is Bianca Reyes and she turned 22 last August 23. Where did she get her screen name? “From Direk Mac Alejandre who handled us in ‘Artista Academy’. Marami na raw kasing Bianca at marami na ring Reyes, so he changed it.”

She reveals that among her prizes from Artista Academy, she only got the P1 million cash and the Innova car, but the promised condo never came. “May 5 year contract din ako with them at dapat, next year pa ang end ng contract ko sa TV5 but nagpa-release na ako kasi wala na silang projects. I’m thankful naman to TV5 kasi sa kanila ako nagsimula, but I got so depressed nung wala akong ginagawa. Now, I’m managed by Direk Manny Valera who brought me to ABS-CBN so I can do a teleserye with Ms. Malou Santos of Star Creatives and also to Mother Lily nga where I’m now signing an 8-picture contract.”

Roselle Monteverde said the script of her first film is now being written, to be directed by Joel Lamangan. What kind of movie would she prefer to do? “Any kind. Wala akong limitations.” Can she go sexy? “Yes, why not? Basta maganda 'yung material. I’m just so excited to be a Millennial Regal Baby and I hope to be given good roles kasi I really love to act.”

She reveals she and BF Vin Abrenica have broken up. “That was some months ago pa. But we remain friends at maayos naman ang paghihiwalay namin. We both just realized we need to focus on our respective careers muna.”

EDU TOPS LUIS' RECORD: A SECRET

EDU Manzano is very satisfied with his role in GMA7’s new hit soap, “Someone to Watch Over Me”, which rated very high in its pilot week and got very positive feedback from viewers in social media. “It’s nice to be part of an inspirational drama series like this, which is about love, sacrifice, and the unconditional support of the family when someone gets sick with early onset Alzheimer’s disease,” he says. “Very positive ang mensahe nito about commitment for husbands, wives and the whole family.”

Being a loving dad to his three kids Luis, Adie and Enzo Manzano in real life, he can identify with his role as the father of Tom Rodriguez, who gets Alzheimer’s at a young age when he’s just starting his family with Lovi Poe. “I put myself in the shoes of my character and it’s quite a challenge kung paano mo tatanggapin na 'yung anak mo, unti-unting hindi ka na naaalala dahil sa sakit niya. Iisipin mo talaga kung paano mo siya matutulungan as his concerned and caring father.”

In real life, though, he knows his limitations as a dad. He definitely does not interfere when it comes to the love life of his children. “Kasi, they’re entitled to their own privacy when it comes to that. Unless, of course, they’ll be the ones to come up to me to ask for my opinion or advice.

But otherwise, I don’t even ask. Kamukha kay Luis, lagi akong tinatanong about his lovelife, about Angel (Locsin) and Jennylyn (Mercado) then and kay Jessy (Mendiola) now, pero wala naman akong maisasagot kasi as far as I’m concerned, 'yung lovelife ng anak ko, teritoryo niya 'yan, not mine.”

What can he say that all three ex-GFs of Luis have won as FHM Sexiest Woman? “Tatlo lang sila. E, ako, hindi nyo lang alam, anim na sa FHM Sexiest Women ang naging girlfriend ko. Hindi ko lang pinaaalam. Secret natin 'yan,” he cracks.
