THE Philippine National Police yesterday clarified that only more than 300 cops and not 12,500 are undergoing investigation for alleged involvement in illegal drugs.
PNP Public Information Office (PIO) Chief Police Sr. Supt. Dionardo Carlos made the clarification in response to the published report saying that there are at least 12,500 cops involved in illegal drugs as allegedly revealed by PNP-Deputy Chief for Operation P/Director General Benjamin Magalong in a hearing in the House of Representatives.
Carlos explained that there’s a big possibility that Magalong was misquoted as there were 12,500 cops assigned to the anti-drug operation and not undergoing investigation.
“We only have more than 300 personnel involved and are facing investigation,” Carlos said.
Of the figure, only 141 tested positive in the confirmatory drug test conducted by the PNP nationwide.
Meanwhile on the continuous war of the PNP against drugs, Carlos said as of the latest count, 1,046 suspected drug personalities have been killed in anti-illegal drug operations from July 1 to September 8.
A total of 15,681 drug pushers and users were arrested and 642,520 drug users and 48,963 drug pushers decided to surrender.
Under Oplan Tokhang, Carlos said the PNP was able to visit 741,139 houses to convince drug personalities to surrender.
