PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has clarified that he was not serious when he said he would take the Philippines of the United Nations.
Duterte told Palace reporters he was only joking when he said the Philippines should leave the United Nations after two UN experts called the attention of the government on the spate of killings attributed to his war on drugs.
“‘Di ka marunong mag-biro ba? Saan tayo mag-join? Sa association ng mga lumubog?” Duterte said.
Duterte admitted that UN special rapporteurs Agnes Callamard and Dainius Puras, who criticized his administration over the killings in a statement last week, had earned his ire.
“At kung makasalita sila, ano’ng genocide, genocide?” Duterte said.
On the US Department of State’s deep concern over the alleged human rights violations in the country, Duterte cited police’s killings of African-Americans in the US.
“Yes, of course, including us are concerned over human rights violation. The Philippine government is (also) worried about what is being done to the black people there in America being shot even while lying down,” Duterte said.
“So I’m going to send my rapporteur also and investigate them,” the President said, even as he reiterated that the UN rapporteurs should have asked their superiors to write the President a letter.
“It’s about the structure of government, police and everybody there... Just because you are white and just because you are there does not give you any superiority at all….And to form your own paradigm of what countries should be investigated, what countries should be not investigated. Napakabastos naman niya, sabihin mo,” Duterte said.
“Do not do that because you are addressing me as president and you’re pointing to the police structure. This is a government. Why would I say directly, gaga ba siya? So there has to be a superior who will write a letter or respeto sabihin mo sa kanya before saying anything about genocide, genocide,” Duterte said.
“Eh di si [UN Secretary General] Ban Ki [Moon] and magsulat sa akin para sabihin ko sa kanyang wala ka namang ginawa,” he added.
