SAN BEDA overcame sloppy play to subdue San Sebastian, 87-77, and move on the cusp of sweeping the first round in the NCAA seniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Red Lions committed 19 of their 32 turnovers in the first two quarters but still won their eighth straight game with a  better second-half  effort.

“Again, this team is built to be selfless. If we play selfish basketball, it’s not gonna work. We need to prune it down (turnovers),” said a disappointed San Beda coach Jamike Jarin. “We were just lucky that we got away with the win.”

It was a game not pleasing to the eyes, as both squads combined for 62 turnovers, which is a season-high.

Arellano University later joined University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in second place with an 89-69 rout of Jose Rizal University.

The Chiefs dominated the listless Bombers, leading by as much as 28 points to finish their first round campaign with seven wins against two losses.

“Hindi kami malakas dito. Basta kami, we will try to win as many games as possible,” said Arellano mentor Jerry Codiñera.

Donald Tankoua led the Lions with 20 points, five rebounds and four blocks but turned the ball over four times while Davon Potts added 13 points.

San Beda shoots for the nine-game sweep of the first round against JRU on Tuesday.

Earlier, Lyceum of the Philippines University closed out the first round on a high note as it overcame Rey Nambatac’s 14-point explosion in the payoff period to beat defending champion Letran, 75-72.

Nambatac dropped 10 of the Knights’ last 12 points of the game, including a three-pointer that allowed them to move closer at 72-73.

Reymar Caduyac then nailed two buffer free throws to give LPU a three-point cushion before Letran failed to send the game in overtime, as Nambatac was neutralized in the final possession.

Caduyac had 17 points while Mike Nzeusseu also scored 17 points and pulled down 15 points for the Pirates.

Nambatac came through with 22 points while Jerrick Balanza added 14 markers for the Knights.
