HOUSE Majority Leader Rep. Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas yesterday confirmed that Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez has approved the creation of a special committee on the West Philippine Sea to be headed by former Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr.
“The Speaker (Alvarez) has approved it,” said Fariñas referring to the proposed special committee that will help address concerns on the West Philippine Sea.
Fariñas was set to call yesterday a majority caucus to discuss the territorial controversy.
The former Speaker said the creation of a special committee on the West Philippine Sea is very timely to help address the ongoing territorial dispute.
“At hindi dapat ipagwalang bahala ‘yan (creation) ha. Saan ka nakakita na right in your doorstep eh may military base ang ibang bansa?,” Belmonte lamented.
“Through that, I or the Congress as a whole can help FVR (former Fidel V. Ramos) in his mission,” said Belmonte.
He reiterated that he was given by Alvarez the privilege to choose his preferred committee that he wants to head, but would only to head a panel if it’s a special committee on the West Philippine Sea.
