MMDA mulls arming traffic agents anew

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is studying the possibility of arming their traffic agents after an enforcer was attacked and beaten up by a group of drag racers Friday on Macapagal Boulevard.

MMDA assistant general manager for planning Emerson Carlos said the plan will not be imposed hastily because some sectors oppose to the idea.

Carlos said there is a need to arm enforcers assigned in critical areas like the Macapagal Boulevard.

However, the official did not give details as to what type of weapon, if ever, will be given to traffic enforcers.

For the meantime, Carlos said the agency deployed additional traffic enforcers, including motorcycle-riding units on Macapagal Boulevard to avoid a repeat of the incident.

The proposal to arm traffic enforcers was first brought up in September after a violator of the number-coding shot and wounded MMDA enforcer Larry Fiala in Mandaluyong City.

The suspect, Edward John Gonzales, was subsequently arrested and charged.
