Construction of new Valenzuela jail starts

VALENZUELA Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian led the groundbreaking for the construction of the P37.5-million new city jail that will replace the old, overcrowded, overheated facility.

Gatchalian said the five-storey city jail will be built on a 2,204.6 square meter lot in Barangay Maysan.

The old Valenzuela City Jail was built for 200 inmates but it currently houses 479 detainees.

“We want this to be a facility that actually yields positive results, rather than a facility that drains resources and pulls a community downward,” Gatchalian said.

He said the new facility will have 12 large cells spread in four floors to ease up the condition of the inmates.

The mayor said the new facility will be more efficient, humane and will be conducive for both employees and visitors.

City jail warden Chief Insp. Ferdinand Pontillo thanked the city government for supporting the bureau and upholding the welfare of the inmates
