THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday started implementing the motorcycle lane scheme along the 24-kilometer stretch of the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue or EDSA.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino led the early morning launch which was first implemented along Commonwealth Avenue and Macapagal Boulevard.
The motorcycle lane will undergo a dry-run this week to inform motorcycle riders about the scheme. It will be formally implemented on EDSA on Feb. 20.
The motorcycle lane starts from Monumento in Caloocan City to Pasay-Rotonda. The highway’s 4th lane from the right was designated as the motorcycle lane.
Citing studies, the MMDA said the 4th lane was found to be the safest for motorcycle riders. The agency said the 4th lane allows motorcycle riders to easily enter the avenue’s underpass and flyovers.
Violators will be required to attend a 15-minute on-the-spot seminar. A “heart-shaped” sticker bearing the MMDA logo and the phrases "Certified Motorcycle Riders" and "Disiplinado Ako" will be pasted on the motorcycles to show that the rider is already aware of the policy.
The MMDA said the motorcycle lanes are non-exclusive although other vehicles are encouraged to use other lanes to avoid accidents.
Motorcycles are also allowed to deviate from the lane when they are about to take a U-turn, a left turn or a right turn.
