ONE of two security guards of an armored van died after they traded shots with four masked, motorcycle-riding men, killing one of the suspects during a foiled robbery attempt near the posh Alabang Town Center mall in Muntinlupa City before noon yesterday.
Elmer Tagol died instantly from a gunshot wound in the back while his companion Elmo Torea was rushed to Alabang Medical Center for treatment.
Tagol and Torea were both security guards of the Gallantry Security Agency assigned to protect the armored van owned by the East West Bank.
Police identified the slain suspect as Venancio Pioquinto, of Ozamis City, through a driver’s license found in his possession.
Initial investigation showed the guards were escorting the armored van in delivering money to a money changer shop inside the mall when the suspects arrived and blocked them.
The masked men immediately declared the heist but the guards resisted triggering a firefight which resulted in the death of Tagol and Pioquinto.
The remaining suspects fled on the same motorcycles taking nothing with them.
