TWO unidentified holdup suspects victimizing cabs and their passengers were slain after engaging Manila Police District (MPD) Station 6 policemen in a shootout shortly before dawn yesterday in Sta. Ana, Manila.
The suspects were described by Homicide investigator SPO4 Virgo Villareal as between 18 and 20 years old, about 5’3” tall and both armed with .38 cal. guns.
Taxi driver Regente Osalla, 36, of No. 2437 Pasig Line St., Sta. Ana, Manila, told Villareal that at around 2:30 a.m., the suspects flagged him down somewhere in Mandaluyong and asked that they be taken to San Andres Bukid in Manila.
Upon reaching Lambingan bridge near the New Panaderos St. in Sta. Ana, one of the suspects declared a holdup and pointed a gun at the driver while the other took the victim’s wallet.
As soon as the suspects got out of the cab, the driver went straight to MPD-Police Station 6 under Col. Remigio Sedanto and the cops present immediately boarded a service vehicle and went around the site.
The cops were patrolling Sta. Clara Street near Leyba and Isabel Streets in Sta. Ana when Osalla saw the suspects casually walking.
The policemen alighted from their vehicle and approached the suspects but were fired upon, prompting them to shoot back. The police were able to recover the victim’s wallet.
